NZSG – Johnson & Johnson Research Fellowship 2025
Who’s eligible?
To qualify, you must be a current financial member of NZSG and meet one of the following criteria be either:
an advanced trainee in Gastroenterology or Gastro-Intestinal Surgery
OR a Gastroenterology or Surgical specialist in New Zealand working in a department involved in training registrars
OR a basic science/clinical researcher working in a group with a Gastroenterology focus.
Fellowship details
Total funding: up to $65 k, split between research costs and optionally salary for trainees
The amount is awarded in two parts:
At award: once an invoice is provided by the research institution for 75% of requested amount.
At 6-months after a progress report and invoice is provided by the research institution for the remaining 25%

Prepare and submit the following:

Project proposal (max 20 references): background, aims, methods, significance, impact
CV & publication list of the primary applicant (trainee or specialist)
Two referee names, ready to provide references
If trainee applicant:
Personal letter outlining career goals and supervision/facilities
Supervisor or department head’s support letter detailing supervision and resources
Detailed expense breakdown, including trainee involvement
Deadline & timing
Applications close: 5 October 2025
Fellowship must start within six months of award notification
Final report due: by 31 January the following year, with an interim report at least 60 days before the next years ASM
What is awarded
Financial backing for your research or trainee involvement
Visibility through presentation at the ASM and inclusion in NZSG publications
Recognition and awards presented during the ASM dinner ceremony - recipient attendance is required at the ASM dinner function
