JSGE - Research Fellowship Opportunity

Description

This program is designed to annually invite three or four promising young gastroenterologists from APAGE member societies for three to four-month fellowships at teaching hospitals in Japan. The Japanese Society of Gastroenterology (JSGE) will make the final selection of the three or four fellows from among the applicants recommended by Asian national or regional gastroenterological societies.

Objective

The overall objective is to foster closer cooperation among Asian gastroenterologists while advancing knowledge and skills in gastroenterology by providing training opportunities in Japan to promising young Asian gastroenterologists.

Period and location of training

Period: The length of the training period is 3 months or 4 months.
The training end day is fixed at the end of November.
The participants can choose the start date from among two choices at their convenience. (Start date will be August 1st or September 1st)
(After finishing the program, a short report of less than 200-300 words will be required)
Location: Teaching hospitals selected by the JSGE, taking into account the participant’s needs and desires regarding the content of training.

Eligibility

• Applicants must be legally qualified to practice medicine.

• Applicants must be 37 years of age or under as of December 31, in the year of application.

• Applicants must have a documented practical level of proficiency in the English language.
  One of the following certificates of proficiency in English is required.

1. TOEFL (scores of PBT 533 ,iBT 72, CBT 200 and above)

2. TOEIC (scores of 785(L&R) or 1095(L&R+S&W) and above)

3. Passers of ECFMG (Educational Communication for Foreign Medical Graduates)

4. Passers of FMGEMS (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination in Medical Sciences)

5. Certification issued by a public agency proving that the applicant has passed a medical practitioner’s examination in English

6. Diploma or certificate of degree from a school of medicine in which courses are conducted in English

• Applicants will be notified the result of the review by the end of December, 2026, and successful applicants will be required to complete visa procedures before the starting date of this program.

• Applicants must be confident and capable of benefiting greatly from training under this program with a view to advancing their career in gastroenterology and becoming part of their national leadership in this specialty.

Support

The applicants finally selected to participate in the program by the JSGE will be provided with the following :

• Economy-class round trip airfare between their home countries and Japan

• Cost or in-kind allowance for necessary domestic travel and commuting within Japan

• Rent or in-kind allowance for accommodation for the duration of training (single university or hospital employee room- or visitor room-type, or equivalent)

• Cash payment of 90,000 (ninety thousand) Japanese yen per month as a living allowance

• Cost or in-kind allowance for participation in Japan Digestive Disease Week 2027 in Kobe (to cover the registration fee, round trip from the place of training, and accommodation).

• Travel insurance for accidents and sickness during the training period
