NZSG Train the Colonoscopy Trainer Course
The latest Train the Colonoscopy Trainers course was held on 27–28 February at Olympus LIVE and the Totara Haumaru Endoscopy Unit.
This course brought together four surgical endoscopy trainers from Hutt, Whangārei, Nelson and Waikato Hospitals, along with a gastroenterologist returning for an update from Hawke’s Bay and, for the first time, a paediatric colleague. The small group format enabled interactive discussion and close engagement with the faculty.
Faculty members Jim Brooker, Nicola Griffiths and Russell Walmsley were joined by Tim King for the first day of educational theory and teaching principles at the Olympus Albany training facility. On the second day, the faculty was helped by Dr Ho Nam Lee (Endoscopy Fellow) for live, observed teaching episodes at North Shore Hospital, allowing participants to practise and reflect on real-time training techniques in the endoscopy unit.
Participants once again enjoyed two days of immersive learning focused on improving endoscopy training skills. A further course is planned for later in the year, subject to the national and international surgical and gastroenterology conference calendar.
Those involved in endoscopy training are strongly encouraged to attend future courses. Training Leads from Endoscopy Users Groups would be particularly welcome, given the requirements outlined in the New Zealand Gastroenterology Reporting Standards Quality Improvement Programme audit framework.
Those interested in attending future courses are invited to contact the New Zealand Society of Gastroenterology office at office@nzsg.org.nz
We extend our sincere thanks to Olympus Corporation for their continued support, and to the management, booking, and nursing staff of the Gastroenterology Department at Te Whatu Ora Waitematā for facilitating the live training component.
Happy training.
