NZSG Research Fellowship

NEW ZEALAND SOCIETY OF GASTROENTEROLOGY RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

Ferring Pharmaceuticals have generously agreed to provide financial support to the New Zealand Society of Gastroenterology for a Research Fellowship or research grant.

  2. To encourage gastroenterology trainees to participate in research

Eligibility for the Fellowship

Applicants for the New Zealand Society of Gastroenterology Research Fellowship must, at the time of application, be:
EITHER an advanced trainee in gastroenterology or surgery
OR a gastroenterology or surgical specialist in New Zealand working in a department involved in training registrars.

Conditions of the Fellowship

  1. The Fellowship is jointly funded between Ferring Pharmaceuticals and the New Zealand Society of Gastroenterology.
  2. The fellowship amount is up to $50,000.  This is equivalent to the fourth step on the university assistant lecturer (medical) scale (ALMO4). Employer’s contribution to superannuation, at the rate for employees of their host institution, will be provided on request from the host institution.
  3. The fellowship can also be awarded in the form of a grant for a research project initiated by a specialist but with some input from trainee(s).  The amount can be divided between  research expenses and salary provided that details are provided for funding of the trainee and the expected duration of the project
  4. If awarded to a trainee, the fellow will be an employee of the host institution who will provide the contract of employment and claim reimbursement for salary and related expenditure from the treasurer of the New Zealand Society of Gastroenterology Inc.
  5. Applicants are required to be members of the New Zealand Society of Gastroenterology. This includes trainees and specialists.
  6. The fellowship may be awarded for a second year after further application.  This would depend on a satisfactory report at the end of the first year.  The decision will be made by the Executive and will depend on the relative merits of all applications.
  7. The fellow or specialist (if awarded as a grant) is required to present results of his or her research at a scientific meeting of the society.
  8. Transfer of the fellowship to a new host institution is not encouraged.  This would require the approval of both host departments, the authority of the Society and the approval of the Executive of the NZ Society of Gastroenterology.
  9. The fellow should acknowledge the support of Ferring Pharmaceuticals and the  New Zealand Society of Gastroenterology in all publications and in programmes of meetings at which the research is presented.
  10. All research conducted by fellows must be approved by either an approved institutional animal ethics committee or a human subjects ethics committee (accredited by the Health Research Council of New Zealand).
  11. Intellectual property will be subject to the rules of the host institution.
  12. Leave during the fellowship will be subject to the rules of the host institution.

Applications for the Fellowship

Applications should comprise:

  1. A succinct account of the proposed research project including background, aims, methods and significance sections with no more than 20 key references (maximum length 5 x A4 pages of 12 point type).
  2. A curriculum vitae and full publication list of the trainee OR for all researchers if this is an application for a project grant.
  3. The names of two referees who have agreed to provide a reference.
  4. For applications from trainees, a letter from the applicant outlining future career plans and explaining the arrangements for supervision and availability of facilities and working expenses for the research within the host department.
  5. For applications from a specialist for a project grant, a full itemised account of expenses needs to be provided.  Details of the extent of involvement of trainees should be provided.
  6. For trainees, a letter of support from the head of the host department or the supervisor of the research explaining the arrangements made for research supervision and outlining the facilities and working expenses available for research within the host department.

Closing Dates

Applications should be submitted to the secretary of the Society within two months of the appearance of the advertisement (or re-advertisement). The Fellowship should be taken up within six months of confirmation of the award.

Assessment Procedures

Applications will be sent for review to two expert referees chosen by the Executive of the Society. The award will be made by the Executive of the Society.

Frequency of Fellowship Advertisements

Applications will be called for annually by advertisement in the Gastroenterology Newsletter or as a separate circulation to all members of the Society and by advertisement in the New Zealand Medical Journal.
